The German Shepherd is strong and intelligent and was bred originally for tending sheep. They are often used in police and military tasks and have a loyal and protective nature.

The original dogs were big and strong to protect the sheep against thieves and wild animals (bears). For that reason they had to be kept on a chain.

But in the course of time the dog became smaller and more flexible. Their tasks changed and their job was to stop the sheep from drifting away from the herd and to run to protected agricultural areas.

This was the beginning of the modern shepherd dog, who was bred to perform special tasks. They had to be easily trained, self-confident, non-aggressive, weather-resistant and untiring and to be able to control the sheep without hurting them.
